Free Food! Come on Birds, What’s Your Problem?

RSV season is still among us and we have not been able to take Getty out quite yet, so I am trying to find ways to bring the outside, inside. One of my attempts was to make sure all the windows were open so the natural light could come in and she could see all the activity outside. So far this attempt has become an epic fail for this mama.
We have two beautiful shade trees in the front yard and I thought perhaps buying a bird feeder would do the job. I had images of hundreds of song birds stopping in to say hi and then fly away. I thought for sure Getty and I would spend hours looking out the window in birdie delight. Doesn’t this look appealing?
I took great care filling the feeder up to the tippie top just so the birds knew I was serious. I even attached it with a yellow bow to show that I am bird friendly.
I mean if I were a bird, I would stop to check out the free food. Guess how many birds have stopped by. NONE! Not even a Mockingbird or Scrub Jay. But guess who has stopped by?

So if anyone has any ideas on how to attract some beautiful song birds, please let me know. Getty is enjoying Mr.Squiggles in his occasion food raids, but he kind of dines and dashes and doesn’t give her a chance to enjoy him.
But tomorrow is another day and perhaps a feathered friend will stop by to say hi.

This cracked me up. I think that there are special “rules” to follow to attract birds and that they can be very picky, but I can’t help you at all with what they actually are!

Have you tried a Hummingbird feeder? I have friends that have one (filled with liquid) and they always see Hummingbirds. Just a thought! Happy Bird Watching (hopefully soon) :))

I’m afraid one of the key rules for bird feeders is not to hang them near anything that squirrels can get to. But moving to a liquid only feeder would attract hummingbirds however Getty might not be able to see them as well since they don’t land and stay awhile. Is there another location you can place it out front within view?
I will try a different branch and see what comes of it. I had no idea there will rules. 🙂
Yea! Our internet finally got fixed so now I can catch up on Miss Getty Owl! Have really missed not being here…
About the bird feeder…..you hung it – they will come!!! Remember ours up here…birds, squirrels, deer they all eat together!! Even the bears at nite again….darn it! Getty will see her little feathered friends soon….they just need to find their way! Love you all and tonite will catch up on some message reading ~ can hardly wait to hear “Getty’s Lullabies” ~

I saw a bird though Kate…well I think I did…on the sidewalk on the other side of the road! *giggle*
They make little plastic bird feeders you can stick to the outside of your window with suction cups – that might help keep the squirrels from getting to it! My mother-in-law has one on her kitchen window and she says the cardinals love it.

These are all great ideas and I think I will try them all. But does it change the equation if I tell you that birds flock to all of our neighbors trees? I am getting the feeling that we aren’t very popular on our block. 🙂
The yellow ribbon may keep birds away if it is often fluttering in a breeze. You may want to try putting some bird feed in a pan or something to help attract the birds quickly.
Otherwise, it is just a waiting game. Once the birds know there is a reliable source of good food handy, they will show up.
Thank you for the advice. I am doing a few more bird feeder experiments today to see if I can attract the little lovelies.
