SPCA Intermission

From Kate:

We are taking a one day SMA Art Auction break until tomorrow to a) rest and b) update on Getty’s BIG day at the SPCA today.

Getty got the VIP treatment today at the SPCA. Anna thank you so much for being so generous with your time and your access to show Getty all kinds of animals. Getty got to meet some rabbits, some very snuggly kitties, and few puppies personally. Getty pet them each and they in turn gave her some sniffs and some licks on the hand.

Getty was in good spirits for most of the visit. She loves to be pushed in her stroller to the point that if you stop it….well she doesn’t like it. πŸ™‚ So to remedy that we were literally able to walk through all the kennels with all of the animals being put up for adoption.

She seemed to enjoy the kittens perhaps more than the others. There was one kitten named Richie Tenenbaum that she really took a liking to. I am currently working on Mark now to see if Richie can come home to be with Getty permanently. Fingers crossed. He was such a gentle boy that just seemed to be okay with where he was at and in the company of Getty. They seemed to hit it off from the beginning.

Angie took lots of pictures of Getty’s big day. Here are a few very special ones.

We had just gotten out of the van and strolling onto the SPCA grounds, when mama stopped momentarily. Getty was not happy with me, she wanted us to stop stalling and get moving.Β  She had animals to see. πŸ™‚

A BIG black bunny was Getty’s first friend. He was so soft and we helped her stroke his velvet ears.

Her next friend was a white and brindle bunny. So soft and she was starting to warm up to her environment and really enjoy what she was experiencing.

And then something very cute started to happen. We could tell that she was starting to anticipate the next animal. It seemed as though she was starting to “get” that once one animal would spend time with her and leave, another one would reappear. So this picture was taken as we were waiting for the next friend to join her. It was so much fun to watch her get ready to say hello. This next friend, Richie Tenenbaum certainly had her attention and heart-strings.

Aren’t they just a pair. At one point Richie laid his head down on Anna’s arm and just looked at Getty. Such a sweet experience.

After Richie left, daddy stepped in to give Getty a few intermission kisses. πŸ™‚

Getty got to meet a puppy friend as well.

And she got to meet some bigger kitties, and they took a liking to her as well.

All in all we had a terrific time. Too be honest getting out and and about is not easy for a couple of reasons. Timing is probably key. Time of day to do things is very structured for us and to be able to find the time that is conducive for others is very difficult, but so appreciated when we can make it work.

Secondly is that going out is really up to Getty. If she isn’t “feeling it” then we don’t do it. We were at the SPCA for a good two hours and she certainly was not telling us she wanted to go. She was having a great time meeting new friends, looking at everything around her and listening to all of the sounds.

We really enjoyed the day and we hope we can go back sometime soon. Thank you to Anna and your staff. We had a great time.

Now someone tell Mark we need to adopt Richie, he isn’t listening to me. πŸ™‚

Auction Day 4!

From Kate,

Well here was are, day 4 and there is still so much awesome art to bid on. Just to review I have listed all the pieces so far and how much the went for. I am still in awe of theses numbers, thank you everyone!

Auction Items Sold:

Abstract Minnie: $102.00

Blizzard: $50.00

Desert Flowers: $51.00

Gallant Strength: $50.00

Nest of Life: $75.00

Butterflies in Flight: $76.00

For those that are checking out the auction items, I thank you in advance. I do need to apologize though. If you are ever frustrated about the actual picture taken on the item, you can gear those frustrations towards me. πŸ™‚ I take terrible pictures. But my guess is that when you actually buy it and get the artwork in the mail, you will be pleasantly surprised that it is even more beautiful in person. πŸ™‚

Our seventh item up for bids comes from Dawn, whose an awesome mommy to Aiden AKA, Biggie. This mixed media artwork has beautiful decoupaged rainbow butterflies. It would be a beautiful addition to any dorm room, children’s room, or butterfly enthusiast.Β  The dimensions are 21x17x1.5. We named it Rainbow Flight.

The eighth piece up for auction come from an amazing family. The Burks are one of a kind and they have a one of a kind little boy named Jadon, AKA “Bug”. His dad Tony made two very special pieces for the art auction. Let me show the one that has already sold.

I know right? It simply blew my mind when we opened the box to reveal such a special item. It is all wood and hand-painted. This is where the story gets even better. It was sold at the SMA Art Auction on August 13th. A dear friend purchased it and then regifted it back to Miss Getty. My heart is just thumping with happiness. The piece was named Getty Rocks and that is exactly what Getty will be doing with her very own guitar.

Notice I said two pieces. Tony also made a very special piece entitled HERO. I want to read the inscription on the back because it says it all.

” All SMA Kiddos are heroes for the way they smile at life despite what they must endure.”

I couldn’t agree more. This one of kind wood carving is painted in blue with beautiful footprints of Jadon feet. πŸ™‚ This would be an amazing piece for any nursery, a motivational piece of art for any office, or kids room.

Our eighth piece is called HERO.

Tell 5!

From Kate:

I wanted to be able to sneak this in before our next round of auction items tomorrow morning. So in total I sent out 120 Tell 5! Packets. Again I am no math whiz but that is over 600 people that now have become aware of SMA! That is awareness! And to think that idea came from only one cup of coffee. I am usually a three cupper myself. πŸ™‚

So now next steps, I want to see your pictures. Any pictures you have taken of you giving the bracelet or postcard or both to someone will count and you will be entered to win a $50 giftcard and a Lullabies for Getty CD. It is that simple! Each picture is an entry.

Email all of your pictures to hoot@gettyowl.org. We will randomly pick one winner, I will also like to upload all the pictures so everyone can see all the awareness that was spread, literally around the world. Like I said before, SMA is running out of places to hide, and you are all helping us make SMA a mainstream disease. The more we talk about it, the more people become aware, the bigger the fight to find a cure! I truly believe that anything is possible.

Okay so the deadline for the pictures is August 31st. I will reveal the winner and all the pictures on September 1st.

I have had a few very nice people opt out of the giveaway, to you I say thank you, but I still want to see your pictures. πŸ™‚

Thank you all for participating and joining with us to help spread the word. You made August SMA Awareness Month so memorable and you also made a big difference.
